EPD
The environmental product certification (EPD - Environment Product Declaration) is grounded on:
· LCA - Life Cycle Assessment: analysis of product’s life cycle throughout its use “from the cradle to the grave”, according to ISO 14040, 14041, 14042 and 14043 Standards;
· EPD - Environment Product Declaration, drawn up according to the requirements of ISO TC 14025 Technical Regulation.
Each enterprise is free to submit for assessment one or more products, since the submission to this scheme is not conditioned by the product selection effected by the European Commission nor by any requirements thereby enforced, as it is the case for Ecolabel, but just depends on the free choice of the enterprise.
EPD’s purpose is merely informative, thus allowing a comparison of the product taken into account with similar ones. For the time being EPD does not include improvement targets, unlike EMAS Environmental Declaration (which, it must be borne in mind, applies to Organizations rather than products).
